Zia is For Sale ~ Update!

Zia has moved to Ontario this weekend. Her new family has agreed to a three week trial period to make sure she is a perfect fit. So far, all is going very well. I will post on her permanent status on or before November 1st. Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in our beautiful girl. We certainly do miss her, but as always our commitment is to what’s best for the dogs.

Due to a rating of Mild hip dysplasia, we must remove Zia from our breeding program. To say this is disappointing is an understatement. $5000 to our door at 10 weeks old, and a further two years of feeding, vet care, health testing, training, and LOVING puts us in the hole a great deal. Zia is NOT free. The price for her is slightly more than we charge for our 8 week old puppies, and she’s highly trained, socialized, house broken, etc.

We prefer to keep her in Atlantic Canada, especially due to Covid. If her new home doesn’t work out, we want to be able to get her back in a timely manner. We are not in any position to self isolate for 14 days.

Zia LOVES people! She also loves to play ball, chase frisbees, swim, go for woods walks any time of year. She loves to cuddle, and is super well behaved in the house. She is quiet in her crate, whether travelling or for bedtime at home, she is not a complainer.

Bitter & Sweet

This business, for lack of a better term, can be as heartbreaking as it can be rewarding. I recently told friends “breeding will make you crazy and poor”. Both are true, and then some. Such as sad, helpless, frustrated, mystified, and bewildered, to name a few more.

Last month we learned our beautiful princess Zia vom Lindelbrunn did not meet OFA standards for her hips.
We are working at placing her in a loving forever home.
That’s a bitter pill to swallow when you consider the cost of importing her from Germany, two years of feeding, vetting, training, and of course LOVING, only to discover she’s not breed worthy. This of course would be the heartbreaking part.

Even on the Sweet part of this business, there are many folks sad and disappointed this week as the puppies they’d wished for did not materialize. We are blessed with two beautiful girls, both of which we’ve decided to keep for the time being. Hopefully they’ll both be outstanding girls and will eventually replace their momma when it’s her time to retire.

Tiny little rant here; to the folks who say “wow, $2000 for a puppy, you must be rolling in it…” I’m here to tell you, it’s never about the money, because quite frankly the losses far exceed the income. For us, this crazy “business” is about Passion. We simply love what we do, why we do it, and who we do it for. Tam Out.

August News!

Confirmed by ultrasound, our N-litter is due September 8, 2020!

We are excited to announce our repeat litter with our German import Rogue vom Klingsgarten IGP1, IFH-V and our own Glock von der Leidenschaft IPO3. Previous litters from this pair are well on their way to proving superior working drives with both sport and civil achievements.

With the amount of interest in this litter, it’s pretty much PRE-SOLD, that said, many people are still dealing with the challenges of Covid-19 and some may opt to wait for a future litter. We are always accepting applications via our Potential Puppy Owner Questionnaire so feel free to let us know of your interest in this or future litters.

2 year-old Zeus vom Goldbergsee BH, on new helper in training, Alex Betts.

Our German import Zeus vom Goldbergsee BH turned two on June 19. We had his hips and elbows xrayed on that day. We have results in from the OFA, Hips EXCELLENT and Elbows NORMAL! Now our little man can go on supervised “dates”! 😉

In other exciting news, Khaos von der Leidenschaft, the smallest born puppy in the history of our kennel, also had recent hip and elbow evaluations. We just received word from the OFA that his hips are GOOD, and Elbows NORMAL! Also important to know, Khaos and all of his littermates are DCM Clear by parentage. 🙂
This powerhouse is owned by Lisa Gaudet, and trains with both the PEI IGP club, and our own Sirius Working Dog Association. We hope to use him in our breeding program down the line. He is his Daddy’s boy! <3

Covid Puppies

As we get ready to mate for our N-litter, we are increasingly aware of the challenges of shipping puppies throughout North America. We already have a lengthy waiting list with at least half of the applicants located in the U.S.
Anyone in the United States wishing a November puppy from us, is going to have to get creative about getting said puppy home. And it won’t hurt to start thinking outside the box now!

Today I read this CBC article suggesting the Canada-U.S. border could be closed for 12 months or longer depending on the continuing outbreak numbers of Covid-19 in our neighbour country. While we do have board/train agreements, for those who wish to receive their puppy, while they are still puppies, this would be less than ideal.

Just prior to the border closing in March, a gentleman from TN drove up to visit us, and kindly agreed to bring 3 other puppies across the border with his pup. This might be a “thing” going forward. Think truckers folks. If you have a contact who could bring a puppy or more across the border, it would be appreciated by many to make arrangements to share shipping resources.
It would also be appreciated by us!

As I mentioned, we have a lot of interest in this next litter, and I’m sure we could sell out exclusively in Canada. That said, we are always accepting applications via our Potential Puppy Owner Questionnaire. Just keep in mind, shipping might be a challenge. Be prepared to wait for a future “post-Covid” litter, or to look outside the box for ways to get your puppy.

    M-litter – 6 wonderful weeks old!

    Gulp! I can’t believe in just two more weeks almost all of these beauties will be heading to their new homes! We are still determining which pup will go where. There are a lot of amazing drives, and definitely some dominant attitudes in this litter, so it’s really important for us to get it right!

    Below, in birth order are a couple of photos of each pup (taken with cell phone) and current weights as of today. I will hold off on commenting about their personalities for now as these are so far just observations in the litter, not as individuals. I know you’re all excited to find out which one is yours, but it’s still too soon to tell.

    Purple Boy at 6 weeks weighs 3.54 kg = 7.79 lbs
    Blue Boy at 6 weeks weighs 4.01 kg = 8.82 lbs
    Purple Girl at 6 weeks weighs 3.78 kg = 8.32 lbs
    Red Boy at 6 weeks weighs 3.94 kg = 8.67 lbs
    Blue Girl at 6 weeks weighs 3.50 kg = 7.70 lbs
    Green Girl at 6 weeks weighs 3.11 kg = 6.84 lbs
    Orange Boy at 6 weeks weighs 3.53 kg = 7.77 lbs
    Black Boy at 6 weeks weighs 4.49 kg = 9.88 lbs
    Red Girl at 6 weeks weighs 2.96 kg = 6.51 lbs

    February, the month of Love. Puppy Love!

    The M-litter kids are 3.5 weeks old and growing like crazy! Yesterday they had their first taste of puppy mush, which is simply softened puppy kibble enriched with a powdered puppy formula, plus some hot water to warm it up.

    Unfortunately, my website software doesn’t allow me to upload the video directly, so I hope you’ll click on the link to see how they enjoyed it! Today they will have two feedings of mush, plus Mom’s milk. They will work up to 4 feedings per day, with their bed time snack becoming dry kibble by the time they’re 7 weeks. By the time they’re ready for their new homes, they are quite capable of eating dry kibble.

    We are still screening applicants for the remaining three puppies. We’re not sure if it’s going to be three females or two females and one male. One applicant is more interested in drive over gender. So it’s too soon to tell yet.     I try to keep this website upbeat and positive, but life is messy and sometimes bad things happen. The emotions in the early days of a litter are high; fed by exhaustion, aching muscles from hours of lying on the floor, sitting cross legged, doing puppy shakedowns, running at every little squeak or squeal, and making sure every puppy gets on the nipples.
    Last year I was having an emotional moment and wrote a post on Facebook. I liked it a lot. I won’t post it here, in case you’re the kind of person who isn’t keen on emotional stuff. Instead I’ll attach the link to the original post, you can click on it or not.

    Yesterday was one of those days when bad things happen. I wrote a longer post. A catharsis. I thought about my first post all day, sorting through what was important about the events of the day and how I felt about it. It never comes out the way I want when I actually put it down in text, but in the end, I was pretty pleased with the result. Should you wish to read it, you can find it here.

    For those interested in a pup, at this time we have reserved all the males, with a waiting list, and we have one female reserved. There is a great deal of interest in this litter, it’s potentially the last time for this combination. If you’re serious, I wouldn’t wait to contact us.

    M-Litter von der Leidenschaft! Born January 16, ’20 ~ 6 males, 4 females.

    Two days early, but we managed to pull together to get ‘er done! 🙂
    Beginning early evening on Thursday, January 16, 2020 in to late afternoon on Friday, Momma Rogue delivered us a beautiful litter of 10. Six males and four females are all doing well after a full 24 hours.

    This is a three-peat of our wonderful K & L-litters. Offspring from those two litters are already earning titles in working sports, including a few BH (temperament/obedience) titles and some advanced tracking titles. At least one of the K-litter will be competing in IGP1 (formerly Schutzhund and IPO) this winter.
    One of the L-litter is training in police work, specializing in bomb detection.

    This combination has also produced some of the most amazing companions/family guardians for singles, couples, and families. The feedback we get from our buyers assures us, our breeding program is definitely on the right track.

    There is a great deal of interest in this litter already, we are in the early stages of screening, and securing homes right now. Some are return buyers, pre-approved, and some are trusted friends known for many years. A few are new to us with background in police and k9 work. We have not promised the entire litter yet, but we are reserving some pups for those who’ve expressed interest in the recent past.

    Temperament and drives are the deciding factors when selecting homes for any of our litters. If you’re on the reserve list it’s because we need to see (in the coming weeks) if any of this litter will be suitable for your needs. It doesn’t benefit anyone (least of all the puppy) if we can’t make a good match for your wants/needs. Please be patient with us as we make that determination.
